Description
Uncommon, localised resident. Distinguished from [Western Banded Snake-Eagle] at all ages by longer tail with a broad subterminal band and two bars as well as distribution. Adult also differs in well-barred underparts from lower breast to vent. Immature like that of Western Banded Snake-Eagle except for tail-bars. Occurs sparsely along the northeast St Lucia coast and in Mozambique and eastern Zimbabwe. Shy and reclusive frequents open areas near exotic plantations, riverine and lowland forest. Still-hunts from a tree and rarely soars, more often seen early morning. Feeding on snakes, rodents and birds. Call is a high pitched repeated ‘kaw-ko-ko-ko’. 1 kg
