Description

Uncommon, localised resident. Colour combination distinctive; most prominent feature is orange tail with black subterminal band formed by dark dots on the tail-feathers. immatures and adults of northern races have the head the same colour as the back. Has a sharp ‘chip-chip’ or ‘zert’ call, plus a sunbird-like ‘tweet’ in flight. Also gives an occasional outburst of warbling song and makes snapping sounds with its bill. Found in bird parties in thickets and large trees in riverine forests; also on the edges of woodland clearings. A highly agile, restless little bird, constantly flitting from branch to branch or sidling down branches with fanned tail moving.
