Description

Uncommon endemic resident. Told from [Chestnut-vented Warbler (Tit-Babbler)] by white undertail coverts; otherwise distinguished by pale yellow eye and spotted throat. immature has brownish upper parts; throat less clearly spotted. Utters several clear song phrases, each interspersed with rattling notes, ‘chiroo-chirroo-chirroo, trrrrr, chirree-chirree-chirree, trrrrr…’. Creeps about actively within dense cover, then darts to the next bush in quick, jerky flight. Occurs in fynbos and in both desert and mountain scrub throughout the more arid western regions, as well as in the Lesotho highlands.

Bird Family

Small, insectivorous birds of mostly sombre colouring. Many have attractive warbling songs and short calls that aid identification to the practised ear, but sound confusingly similar to the inexperienced. Several species visit southern Africa from Europe during summer. Sexes are alike.
