Description

Uncommon resident. Differs from [Ashy Flycatcher] mainly in behaviour and white outer tail-feathers. Immature is like adult. The call is a loud, cheerful ‘teee-reee’, the second syllable lower than the first, like a distant ringing telephone. At close quarters, also a trilling ‘wir-ri-rit’. Occurs singly or in pairs in broad-leaved woodland, mixed bushveld and riverine forest. Calls frequently and fans its tail while raising and lowering it, constantly moving through the mid stratum; cf. habits of [Ashy Flycatcher]. Often joins bird parties.

Bird Family

Small, insectivorous birds with prominent bristles protruding from the base of their bills. Many of the soberly coloured species catch insects on the ground or in flight after watching from a low perch; others, especially the colourful and ornate species, are leaf-gleaners, but also hawk insects in short aerial sallies.
