Description

Uncommon, localised resident. Distinguished from [Golden-breasted Bunting] by black face and ear coverts, no white line below eyes, plus greyer mantle. Female is like male but head markings are more brown than black. Immature has brownish (not white) head-streaks and browner flanks. Has a soft ‘tureee’ call and a sweet but variable song ‘wee-chidderchidder, chidderwee’ or ‘her-ip-ip-ip … her-hee’. Usually singly or in pairs in miombo woodland.
