Yellow-breasted Apalis

Description

Common resident. Easily identified by combination of grey head, reddish-orange eye, yellow breast and green upper parts. Amount of grey on head varies: most extensive (a) in northern Namibia and northern Botswana; least extensive (b) in Mozambique, elsewhere variable between these extremes. Tail length also varies. In all races black central breast-bar may be absent or vestigial. The normal call is a buzzy ‘skee-skee-skee-chizZICK-chizZICK’, to which the mate replies ‘krik-krik-krik’. Usually occurs in pairs in a variety of bushveld habitats, riverine bush and forest fringes.

Bird Family

Small, insectivorous birds of mostly sombre colouring. Many have attractive warbling songs and short calls that aid identification to the practised ear, but sound confusingly similar to the inexperienced. Several species visit southern Africa from Europe during summer. Sexes are alike.
