Description

Common resident. Identified by grey head and single white shoulder-bar. Bill black when breeding, otherwise horn-coloured. Sexes are alike. Immature has a streaked mantle. Utters a repetitive ‘cheep-chirp’, the first note descending, the second ascending, plus an occasional trill. Found in pairs in summer, small flocks in winter, in various wooded habitats; common in many towns. It frequents large trees but feeds on the ground.
