Description

Locally common resident. Blacker than [Helmeted Guineafowl] with characteristic black head-plumes; further told by unmarked black neck, pale outer secondaries and red eyes. Immature is barred chestnut, buff and black on the upper parts. Has a rattling alarm call; when breeding, calls ‘tick-tack, ticktack-tirr-tirr-tirr’. Flocks in lowland and riverine forest, lowveld broad-leaved woodland and thickets, coastal bush and dune forests.
