Description

Common, near-endemic resident. Larger than [Cut-throat Finch], male with an entirely red head, female paler, plainer on the upper parts, lightly barred below, bill dark horn. Call is a distinctive double note ‘chuck-chuck’. Mostly seen in small flocks in dry thornveld or grassland, feeding on the ground, often with other species. A frequent visitor to waterholes and common in suburbia, especially in rural towns in arid areas.
