Description

Common resident. Told by its dark-blue crest with a purple sheen, more blue on the folded wings and tail, ochre-washed breast and black bill. The call is a long sequence of notes, starting quietly and rising to a crescendo ‘kerkerkerkerker-kok-kok-kok-kok-kok-kok…’, the last sound repeated about 20 times, becoming more deliberate and spaced out. Also utters a jumbled series of ‘kokokok…’ sounds. Pairs occur in coastal forests, riparian forest, bushveld and well-wooded valleys.

Bird Family

Fruit-eating Afrotropical forest or bushveld birds with crested heads, fairly long tails and an agile springing action when jumping along branches. Turacos have crimson primary feathers that are strikingly revealed in flight. The grey species, which lack red wing feathers, are now known as ‘Go-away-birds'.
