Description

Fairly common resident. Male distinguished by scarlet throat and black gorget; female similar but black gorget much reduced. Immature shown in first plumage. The call is a liquid, ventriloquial and rapidly delivered ‘kong-kong-koit’. Pairs occur in dense coastal and valley bush, lowland forest fringes, riverine forest and mixed bushveld. Secretive, frequenting the lower stratum in search of insects.

Bird Family
