Description

Common endemic resident. Heavily streaked appearance diagnostic, boldest in northern birds. Also shows a small, dark mask. Immature resembles adult. Normal call is a thin, plaintive ‘tweetoo, twee-ee’ given frequently, often the first clue to its presence (similar to co-occurring Swee Waxbill). Also has a brisk warbling song of sibilant quality. Pairs and small parties frequent tree canopies in forests at all altitudes, as well as adjacent forested kloofs and plantation fringes.
