Description

Common resident. Chestnut breast-band diagnostic in male; fainter in female. Female also lacks the black crown and lores. Utters a soft ‘chuck’ on take-off. Occurs singly, in pairs and in scattered flocks on saltpans, coastal lagoons and sandflats, less frequently singly or in pairs inland at pans, gravel pits, dams and banks of large rivers. Inland records widespread but irregular.
