Description

Locally common resident. A small, almost entirely brown martin except for white belly; see (a). Sometimes occurs with entirely brown underparts (b); then told from (Rock Martin) by lack of ‘windows’ in the tail and more slender appearance. The call is a soft twittering. Flocks forage over rivers with sandy banks (in which it breeds), estuaries and other wetlands, roosting in reed beds when not breeding.

Bird Family

The name martin is loosely applied to certain close relatives of swallows, particularly species of the genus *Riparia* and their allies. Generally, with the exception of the House Martin, martins have brown plumage and square tails, and while some martins build typical swallow-type mud nests, most breed in holes in cliffs or banks.
