Description

Uncommon to locally common endemic resident. Distinguished by bright red bald head, red bill and pink legs. Iridescent plumage appears black at a distance. Immature is duller, the head and neck covered in greyish feathers. Sometimes utters a high-pitched ‘keeauw-klaup-klaup’. Small flocks frequent montane grassland in the eastern high-rainfall region, breeding and roosting on cliffs. Feeds singly or in groups in dry or burned grassveld and agricultural lands.

Bird Family

Fairly large birds with longish legs. Ibises have long, decurved bills for probing in the ground for insects, worms and other invertebrates, as well as small reptiles and mammals on occasion. Spoonbills have spatulate bills used to catch small fish and aquatic invertebrates. All but the Hadeda Ibis are normally silent.
