Rudd's Apalis Newman's Birds

Description

Locally common, near-endemic resident. Differs from [Bar-throated Apalis] in dark eye, predominantly yellow-and-green (not white) undertail, more yellow-green upper parts and buff wash to underparts, especially throat. The call is a fast, loud ‘tritritritritritritrit…’ by one bird, the other calling at the same time (but out of phase) ‘punk-punk-punk…’. Usually seen in pairs in coastal bush and dune forest, especially in dense thickets overgrown with creepers. Not secretive.

Bird Family

Small, insectivorous birds of mostly sombre colouring. Many have attractive warbling songs and short calls that aid identification to the practised ear, but sound confusingly similar to the inexperienced. Several species visit southern Africa from Europe during summer. Sexes are alike.
