Description

Common endemic resident. Chestnut breast and tail distinctive. Flight pattern shows rounded wings and wide, short chestnut tail. Occasionally occurs with breast blotchy-black, even all-white; then distinguished from [Augur Buzzard] by dark (not white) underwing coverts. Immature is pale rufous, often much paler than illustrated, and shows no tail-bands. The call is a jackal-like, high-pitched mewing ‘kip-kweeeu, kweeeu, kweeeu’ while flying. Occurs in hilly or montane regions and adjacent grassland. Often perches on roadside posts. Hunts on the wing for small and medium mammals, game birds reptiles, insects and carrion. Constructs a large stick nest on cliff ledge, tree or pylon. 0,8-1,7 kg.
