Description

Fairly common resident. Both sexes differ from [White-tailed Crested Flycatcher] in white wing-bars and whiter underparts. Male has black throat and breast; mottled in female. Crest length varies regionally. Usually first detected by call, a rasping ‘zwee-zwer’ uttered frequently, virtually identical to that of [African Paradise-Flycatcher]. Male also sings a high-pitched ‘kwew-ew-ew-ew’ (like a bush-shrike) followed by four clicks. A lively, active little bird, usually in pairs in the mid- and higher strata of dense coastal bush, coastal forest and montane forest near streams.
