African Dusky Flycatcher

Description

Common, localised resident. More dumpy than [Spotted Flycatcher], the underparts duskier with faint smudges (not streaks). Immature is like adult. Utters a thin, sibilant ‘zeeet’ and a characteristic ‘tsi-ri-rt’. Occurs singly or in pairs in forest fringes, riverine forests and broadleaved woodlands in moister regions. Behaviour much like [Spotted Flycatcher] but frequents the more lush coastal and montane mist-belt regions.

Bird Family

Small, insectivorous birds with prominent bristles protruding from the base of their bills. Many of the soberly coloured species catch insects on the ground or in flight after watching from a low perch; others, especially the colourful and ornate species, are leaf-gleaners, but also hawk insects in short aerial sallies.
